A solitary figure of a man with a large black hat is seen in a window starkly silhouetted by the light striking the garden in the background. Patterns of green and yellow of the trees outside are juxtaposed with the patterns of the light on the wallpaper and the dark walls. Especially in his Nabi period, Vuillard was fascinated by the depiction of silhouettes, reflections, views through doorways and windows, and patterns.
